Pyukumuku plush crochet pattern

I can't wait for Sun and Moon, I love the new designs (and redesigns) so far! Pyukumuku is extra cute and easy to make! A great pattern for a beginner, not too many pieces, not much sewing, and you only need a few colors!

Read pattern carefully before starting, particularly the instructions at the beginning of the pattern. There are also many tips throughout the pattern and in the assembly section that will help you when making different pieces, be sure to read those too!

Materials:

* Black worsted weight yarn

*  Small amounts of pink and white worsted weight yarn (a slightly darker pink would be better but that color was all I had)

*Large yarn needle for sewing pieces together

* F hook

*G hook

*Straight pins for pinning pieces on before sewing them on

*Stuffing

*A white pom pom if you don’t want to make one (it’s really fun and easy though!)

Note: there is no gauge for this pattern. The only thing that is important is that you have a tight stitch when crocheting. If you use the recommended hooks it should be fine but if you are someone who crochets more loosely you may want to reduce the hook size accordingly.

This pattern is worked in rounds (unless otherwise noted) and may use any of the following techniques/abbreviations:
Sc- single crochet
inc- increase
dec- decrease, particularly you should use the invisible decrease if you know how to do it (if you don't, there are many tutorials available online)
sc in each sc or work even- single crochet in each single crochet, don't add any increases or decreases
R- round or row
Ch- chain
# sc or sc #- for example 5 sc or sc 5 both mean to crochet in the next 5 sc, with one single crochet in each.
Repeat (*)- repeat what is between the asterisks * until you come to the end of the round, unless otherwise indicated
ring- magic ring. If you cannot do this technique then you may substitute this: ch 2 and sc however many were supposed to go in the ring into the second ch. However this will leave a small hole in the piece, this is why the magic ring is preferred, it leaves no visible hole. Many tutorials on how to do the magic ring are available online.

The numbers in parenthesis at the end of each row are the number of stitches you should have when that row is done. Mark the start of each round with a marker and move this marker as you complete rows/rounds. This pattern is worked in the round (continuous spiral) unless otherwise noted.

IMPORTANT NOTE!
All pieces (unless otherwise indicated) are worked with TWO strands of yarn together. You may do this by taking the strand on the outside of the skien and the one which comes from the inside of the skien together. Crochet with two strands the same way you would crochet if you had only one, hold them both together as you crochet. This will yield a bigger plush faster and with less effort than crocheting with only one strand. This pattern has not been tested for only one strand and pieces such as the eyes would need to be adjusted for size on your own.

Body (make 1 w/ two strands of black yarn and G hook)
Round1- 6sc in ring (6)
R2- inc in each sc (12)
R3- *sc, inc * (18)
R4- *2sc, inc* (24)
R5- *3 sc, inc* (30)
R6- *4sc, inc* (36)
R7-23- work even (36)
Stuff as you go
R24- *4sc, dec* (30)
R25- *3sc, dec* (24)
R26- *2sc, dec* (18)
R27- *1 sc, dec* (12)
R28- *dec* (6)

Short spikes (make 4 with pink yarn, 2 strands held together w/G hook)
Round 1- 5sc in ring (5)
R2- inc, sc, Inc, sc, sc (7)
R3- sc 2, Inc, sc 2, inc, sc (9)
R4- work even (9)
R5- sc 3, inc, sc 2, inc, sc2 (11)
R6-7- work even (11)
Stuff firmly and leave long tail for sewing.

Tall spikes (make 2 w/pink yarn and 2 strands held together, G hook)
Round 1- 5sc in ring (5)
R2- inc, sc, Inc, sc, sc (7)
R3- sc 2, Inc, sc 2, inc, sc (9)
R4- work even (9)
R5- sc 3, inc, sc 2, inc, sc2 (11)
R6- work even (11)
R7- sc 2, inc, sc 3, inc, sc 4, (13)
R8-12- work even (13)
Stuff firmly, leave long tail for sewing.

Eye (make two out of pink w/1 strand of yarn and F hook)
This is worked around a chain, you will crochet down one side then go up the back of the chain.  Can also make these out of felt etc

Chain 4, sc in first chain from hook, sc in next ch, put 3 sc in last ch, now working around back of chain on the opposite side: sc in next ch and end w/ a sc in the first ch so that it now has 3 sc in it. Basically what you are doing is crocheting around the chain in a circle so the chain is in the middle/is the middle of your oval.

Tail
For the tail make or purchase a pom pom, making a pom pom from yarn is easy and there are tons of tutorials and videos online!

Assembly
  • Pin spikes to back and sew on
  • sew on tail
  • position eyes and sew on
  • embroider mouth/nose
