Fluttershy My Little Pony Saddle bag/ shoulder bag

I've had this pattern written up for a while but keep forgetting to post it, someone at Con yesterday asked me for it so here it is! Just a simple bag I made to go with my fluttershy cosplay, you could modify it to match anypony you want or just make a regular bag. It's a nice size for your DS, wallet, phone, and camera with a little room left over. I made the strap a solid color even though on the show the part that goes over her back is dark brown ( I had too much light brown and no dark brown and I was strapped for time). I'll include notes in the pattern for if you want to change the strap color. This is a nice simple pattern good for people just getting into crochet. Let me know if you have any questions!

Materials:

* Tan/light brown yarn (I used warm brown from red heart) You will need 2 skeins if you are using it for the bag and strap, one skein if you are only using it for the bag (but it will be close to the whole skien so if you crochet loosely you might need more)

*(Not pictured) Dark brown yarn for the strap-1 skien If you are just using it for the decoration you only need a small amount

* Light pink yarn

*Dark pink yarn (small amount)

*Small amounts of white and blue yarn

*Sewing needle

*H hook, G hook, and F hook

*Pattern for your appropriate cutie mark (see pattern for more details) or felt to make your cutie mark out of

*Snaps or something else to close the bag, I used magnetic snaps you can find them at your local craft store

*optional: cardboard to put in the bottom of the bag to help keep the shape, see assembly for more info

This bag is worked in rows and uses the following terminology:

hdc- half double crochet
dec-decrease
dc- double crochet
sc- single crochet
slp stch- slip stitch
ch- chain
R- row
Crocheting in front or back loops

The numbers in parenthesis at the end of each row are the number of stitches you should have when that row is done. Mark the start of each round with a marker and move this marker as you complete rows/rounds.

IMPORTANT NOTE!
All pieces (unless otherwise indicated) are worked with TWO strands of yarn together. You may do this by taking the strand on the outside of the skien and the one which comes from the inside of the skien together. Crochet with two strands the same way you would crochet if you had only one, hold them both together as you crochet. This will yield a bigger plush faster and with less effort than crocheting with only one strand. This pattern has not been tested for only one strand and pieces such as the eyes would need to be adjusted for size on your own.

Body of bag: Make 1 with light brown or main bag color, 2 strands of yarn with H hook)
Ch 2 and turn at the end of all rows!
Row1- ch 31, hdc into 3rd ch from hook and each one after (29 hdc total)
R2-21 hdc in each hdc (29)
Now we are making the bottom of the bag:
R22- hdc in back loop only (the loop farthest from you) (29)
R23-26- hdc in each hdc (both loops) (29)
R27- hdc in front loops only (the ones closest to you) (29)
R28-47- hdc in each hdc (you're working in both loops again now) (29)
Now we're going to start on the flap/closure part of the bag
R48- working in back loops only (the ones farthest from you), dec, hdc in rest (28)
R49- working in both loops again, dec, hdc rest (27)
R50-53- hdc in each hdc (27)
R54- dec, hdc rest (26)
R55- dec, hdc rest (25)
R56- dec, hdc to last 2 stitches, dec over last 2 stitches (23)
R57- dec, hdc to last 2 stitches, dec over last 2 stitches (22)
R58- dec, dec, hdc to last 4 stitches, dec, dec (17)
Finish off and leave a long tail so you can weave it into the body of the bag and it won't show.

Strap (make 1 starting with light brown, even if you will change the color of the strap! We start off making the sides of the bag. Use H Hook and 2 strands of yarn)
Leave a long tail for sewing the sides on later.
Ch2 and turn at the end of each row! (except when doing sc, ch1 and turn there)

Row1- ch7, hdc in 3rd ch from hook and all rest (5 hdc total)
R2-21-hdc in all hdc (5)
Change the color now if you would like the actual strap part to be a different color.
R22- dec, hdc in rest (4)
R23- sc in each stitch (4) note that we're using single crochet now, this will help the strap stretch less.
R24-173- If you want your bag longer or shorter now is the time to change that. Add or subtract more rows from this part to get the length you like. I made mine so it can be an across the chest messenger bag style but also be worn as a shoulder bag without being too long. As you make the strap, lay it over your shoulder to get an idea how it will look, keep in mind it might stretch a little when you put  stuff in your bag.
R174- inc, hdc in rest (4) If you changed your strap color, change back to the main bag color now.
R175- inc, hdc in rest (5)
R176-195- hdc in each hdc (5)
finish off and leave long tail for sewing side on.

Butterfly
For this part I used the pattern from here: http://cache.lionbrand.com/faq/542.html You can easily find other butterfly patterns too if this one isn't to your liking or is too hard.
I used G hook and 2 strands of pink yarn, obviously ignore the directions about changing colors as we are making this in a solid color.
For the outside I single crocheted around in white then slip stitched around the outside in blue

Body for butterfly
I made up my own pattern for this part:
F hook and 1 strand of dark pink yarn
Ch 12, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc, hdc, hdc, dc, dc, dc, hdc, hdc, sc, put 3 sc into end and turn it so you will be working along the back of the chains (we are working in a circle around the chain). sc, hdc, hdc, dc, dc, dc, hdc, hdc, sc, 2 sc in last for 3 total in that ch. Now we'll make the antenna:
Now ch 8 and slip stitch into the 2nd ch from hook and each after, slip stitch to rejoin with main body part. Repeat to make the other antenna, finish off, leave a tail to sew it to the wings.

If you want to make a different cutie mark/pony's saddlebag:
Google what that pony's saddle bag looks like (I'm pretty sure you can see all of them in the episode 'Dragonshy") and google search for a crochet pattern for that shape (ie google 'crochet apple applique' or something similar if you are making applejack's bags). Or you can make the cutie mark out of felt too!

Closure strap (make 1 in dark brown)
F hook
Ch 12, hdc in 3rd ch from hook and each after (10 hdc)
R2-13- hdc in each hdc.
Finish off, leave long tail for sewing

Assembly:
Sew the sides of the strap to the sides of the bag, make sure the strap isn't twisted.
Sew the closure strap part on the flap of the bag
Sew the butterfly on
sew on closure (snap, button ect). I used magnetic snaps for mine, I really reccommend it because it's easy to close the bag when your'e in a rush versus a regular snap. A tip for hiding the snap on the bag  flap so you don't see the metal or if you're sewing a snap on: crochet a small square of the same color as your closure strap and sew the snap to that then sew that small piece to the closure strap so it will blend in and you won't see metal or thread ect. This doesn't matter for the snap for the body of the bag since the metal part or sewing will be on the inside.
Cut a piece of cardboard the same size of the bottom of the bag, it helps give the bag a nice shape. Optional
