Goomy Crochet Plush Pattern

Wanted to do an easy plush after Noivern and this little guy fit the bill! Such a cute little dragon blob! This pattern wouldn't be too bad for someone just getting into amigurumi/plush making. The assembly isn't too bad and the main part of it is just a ball. Pattern after the break, enjoy!

(c) Kim Novak 2013
The following pattern was written and designed by me and is copyrighted. You may not sell or reproduce this pattern in any way. Do not claim this pattern or plush as your own design. You may not sell this pattern. You may not sell what you make from this pattern. Please respect this, I spent a very long time designing this plush and pattern, there is a great deal of effort and love put into this. Thank you very much for your understanding.
Read pattern carefully before starting, particularly the instructions at the beginning of the pattern. There are also many tips throughout the pattern that will help you when making different pieces, be sure to read those too! Pictures at the end of the pattern will help with sewing stuff on.

Materials:
*White yarn

*Light purple yarn

*light green yarn

*Small amount of black yarn for embroidering eyes

*Fiberfill/stuffing

*G hook and F hook

*Straight pins for pining pieces on before sewing them on

Note: there is no gauge for this pattern. The only thing that is important is that you have a tight stitch when crocheting so that no stuffing will show through the finished pieces. If you use the recommended hooks it should be fine but if you are someone who crochets more loosely you may want to reduce the hook size accordingly.

This pattern is worked in rounds (unless otherwise noted) and may use any of  the following techniques/abbreviations:
Sc- single crochet
inc- increase
dec- decrease, particularly you should use the invisible decrease if you know how to do it
sc in each sc- single crochet in each single crochet, don't add any increases or decreases
R- round or row

hdc- half double crochet
dc- double crochet
Repeat (*)- repeat what is between the asterisks * until you come to the end of the round, unless otherwise indicated
ring- magic ring. If you cannot do this technique then you may substitute this: ch 2 and sc however many were supposed to go in the ring into the second ch. However this will leave a small hole in the piece, this is why the magic ring is preferred, it leaves no visible hole. Many tutorials on how to do the magic ring are available online.
Working in rows- when working in rows please ch 1 and turn at the end of each row, it will not be written out to save time.

The numbers in parenthesis at the end of each row are the number of stitches you should have when that row is done. Mark the start of each round with a marker and move this marker as you complete rows.

IMPORTANT NOTE!
Some pieces are worked with TWO strands of yarn together, the instructions will say what parts. You may do this by taking the strand on the outside of the skien and the one which comes from the inside of the skien together. Crochet with two strands the same way you would crochet if you had only one. This will yield a bigger plush faster and with less effort than crocheting with only one strand.

For this pattern it's important to follow the assembly instructions at the end, some parts must be put on before others.

The next parts are half circles that will be sewn onto the body to make the sort of ripple/wave that Goomy has around it's middle. Look at the pictures in the assembly instructions at the end to help you sew them on later.

Face white half circle (Make 1 in white with F hook and 1 strand of yarn)
This is worked in rows, you will start with a magic ring but pull it into a half circle, not a full circle.
R1- 4 sc in ring, pull tight and shape into half circle (4)
R2- ch1 and turn, inc in all (8)

Row1- 5 sc in ring, pull tight and shape into a half circle (5)
R2- inc in all (10)
finish off, leave tail for sewing later

*Note on the face green oval things: If you don't feel like making them or are good at felt, you can just cut these out of felt and sew them on!
Face Green Ovals (These are the larger ones that go on his 'cheeks' Make 2 in green with F hook and 1 strand of yarn)
The green spots are oval shape instead of a perfect circle. You're still working in the round though! Instead of starting with a circle you start with a chain and crochet around that.
R1-ch 7, inc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 4 chains, put 3 sc in last chain, working around other side of chain sc in next 4 chains. Sc in the last chain which should have 3 sc in it now and you should have crocheted all the way around your starting chain. (14)
R2- inc, sc in next 4, inc, inc, inc, sc in next 4, inc, inc (20)
R3- sc, inc, sc in next 5, inc, sc, inc, sc, inc, sc in next 5, inc, sc, inc (26)
R4- sc, sc, inc, sc in next 6, inc, sc, sc, inc, sc, sc, inc, sc in next 6, inc, sc, sc, inc (32)
R5- sc in next 3, inc, sc in next 7, inc, sc in next 3, inc, sc in next 3, inc, sc in next 7, inc, sc in next 3, inc (38)

Small green body ovals (Make 3 with green and F hook, 1 strand)

Once you've finished all of the above parts, see assembly instructions and sew on as described before continuing.

Skirt/ foot/ bottom of body part (Make in purple w/ G hook and 2 strands)
This is the part that goes around the middle of Goomy and will become the ruffly part that he rests on. Before you start you may want to use some scrap yarn to decide where you want to put this part. I did mine around row 21 of the body. Weave yarn of a contrasting color all the way around the body round you have chosen to help guide you while you crochet and remove it later. This part is a little free form and doesn't have to be exact or perfect, if it looks good to you, just go with it! No worries! Refer to the pictures to help you. If you get stuck I wrote up an alternate skirt pattern below, after the regular pattern.

You will be crocheting around the posts of a round in the body, I'm using white yarn here to make it easier to see. Put the hook under a post/stitch of the round you want.

Draw yarn onto the hook and pull it under the post

How it looks after you've completed the stitch.

R1-Attach your yarn in the desired round and crochet around all the way using sc, I had 51 scs but you may have a slightly different number. After round 1 or 2 sit the plush on a table to see if you like where you put the skirt part before continuing.
R2- hdc in each sc around
R3-since I had 51 stitches I did *7dc, inc* all round, note we are using double crochet now. I chose *7dc, inc* since 51 stitches is close to the total number of stitches in the body on round 9. If your number is different you may want to change the round to match what the total number of stitches is closest to.
R4- this round I did *8dc, inc* but you should follow the pattern based on whatever you did in R3. For example if you did *6dc, inc* in R3 then for R4 you should do *7dc, inc*. Just add one to the number of dc before increasing. This way we will increase evenly in relation to the previous round.
R5- for this row I did about half a round, just until it all looked even. Sit the plush on a table and look to see if the skirt part looks even all the way around. Crochet around for R5 until it looks how you like it, no right or wrong here. When you are happy with it do the following: hdc, hdc, sc, sc, slip stitch, slip stitch. Finish off weave in ends.

 * Alternate skirt assembly: If you get really stuck and can't figure out how to crochet on the body you can make the skirt separate and sew it on. You'll need to make a crochet chain into a circle big enough for where you want to sew it on later then follow the pattern. Measure your chain against where you want to sew it on later to make sure it fits.

Tail (Make 1 in purple with G hook and 2 strands yarn)
Worked in rows like the face 1/2 circles were. Chain 1 and turn at the end of each row.
R1- 4 sc in ring, shape into half circle (4)
R2- inc in all (8)
R3- *sc, inc* (12)
R4- * 2 sc, inc* (16)
R5- now we will crochet across the flat bottom part of the circle (the part that is the bottom of row 1) crochet 9 sc across it (9)
R6- inc, sc in rest (10)
R7- inc, sc in rest (11)
R8- inc, sc in rest (12)
R9- inc in the first and last stitches of this row, sc in all others (14)
R10- sc in each sc (14)
Leave tail for sewing on later

Side feet parts (make using purple and G hook , 2 strands of yarn, you will make 5 of these, see picture for help/placement)
These are made by attaching the yarn to the skirt part and crocheting across it, I did it this way to save you some sewing but you could easily make the pieces separate and sew them on later. To do this start by chaining 12, hdc in the 3rd chain from the hook and all the rest then continuing the pattern from there.
Worked in rows,  ch1 and turn at the end of each row.
It's easier to space these correctly if you have sewn the tail on first. You may also want to use scrap pieces of yarn to mark out where you will put the feet, to help you plan out the spacing before you start. Mark out 5 spaces that are 10sc across, you might have some space in between the feet, that's ok!
R1- Attach yarn to edge of skirt part, hdc 10 across (10)
R2- 3 dec spread out evenly, hdc in all other stitches (7)
R3- 2  dec spread out evenly, hdc in all other stitches (5)
R4- dec, hdc, dec (3)
finish off, weave in ends

Assembly
1. Sew white face half circle and small purple face half circle on

2. Sew large purple half circles and small white half circles to body
This is what the side of the body looks like, do this on both sides, 2 big purple half circles with a small white one in between.

3. Sew large 'cheek' face ovals to face

4. Sew body ovals to body, use pictures to help, they overlap and cover up part of the body half circles

5. After the skirt part is done, sew the tail to it in the appropriate place
(see above picture for tail reference

6. crochet on the 'feet', using pictures to help
Feet and tail view from underneath (tail is longer section)

7. Sew on small and large antenna, pin them all on to get the placement correct before sewing. If you've stuffed them firmly you can curve the large antenna with your hands and they should hold that shape.

8. embroider eyes

    1. Thanks! I hope you try your hand at learning some time, at first it's frustrating but once you learn like 2 or 3 things you can make stuff like this! Most plushies only require that you know one stitch, someone you know may even be able to teach you ^_^

    1. Thanks so much! I really want to do a fennekin, a big or close to life size one! I bought the yarn but don't know when I'll get to it so just keep a look out ^_^; I'm working on a bunch of stuff for conventions right now and have a few other projects that are almost finished! :3

  4. Do I have to use two strands of yarn? I don't know how to do that. Reply ASAP Please!

    1. Yes you do, otherwise all the side pieces won't be the right size. Don't worry though, it's not hard! Just hold two strands of yarn together at the same time and crochet with them like you were holding only one strand. Hold the two strands together and pretend it's just one really thick piece of yarn, do all your stitches normally, hopefully this clears things up! Have fun making Goomy!
I found a youtube video that illustrates the concept well, except you will be using two strands of white yarn or whatever color the pattern says:

    5. P.S, Your Goomy looks exactly the same as in the anime! He is so adorable! Is he life-size just asking?

    6. To the top of his head/body it's about 5inches, to the top of his taller antenna it's about 10 inches. Not sure what size Goomy is supposed to be but the plush is pretty big, enjoy!

    7. I don't have light purple yarn so can I use a creamy white as a replacement?

      Delete
    8. You can use whatever colors you like, if you use white then the whole body will be white though. You could make it shiny colors? That's light pink on the bottom and blue for the spots I think.

    9. I mean that for the top of the body I will use creamy white and I already have the purple for the bottom. thanks!

    13. That part can be a little confusing for beginners, I think the technical term is 'surface crochet' if you want to google more about it. I also have directions where you can make the skirt part separate and sew it on. And don't worry if you don't get it right the first time, I had to do it a few times before I had it how I liked it, don't give up!

  9. although I might try something else first before this guy because I find the skirt REALLY confusing. i don't know exactly how many i should chain for the attaching the skirt to the dark purple!

    1. I know making something without exact instructions is a little intimidating at first but don't worry too much, just make the skirt fit where you want it. The exact number of stitches doesn't really matter as long as it looks how you want it to. I redid mine a few times before I liked it. To decide how much to chain just make a chain and hold it onto the plush where you would like to sew it on, there's no wrong answer ^_^

  12. Hi, I know it's been a couple years but I'm just getting into this. G hooks come in a variety ranging from G/6 4.0mm, G/6 4.25mm, or G/7 4.5mm. My set only has G/7 4.5mm, but I also have a G/6 4.25mm. Which is the one you used? Boy I sure hope the 4.5mm one will do, cuz I'm half way through the body about to change colour.
