Scraggy Crochet Pattern

Finally a new pattern! I have to say I love Scraggy, his tough attitude and cute clumsiness! I hope you guys have fun making him, the plush is fairly big, a little over a foot tall. I've been working on it off and on for a while and finally had some time to get it done.  I was stuck on an idea for how to do the tail and kept putting it off, it turned out to be my favorite part ^_^ Pattern after the jump.

Read pattern carefully before starting, particularly the instructions at the beginning of the pattern. Let me know if you find any errors or problems! If you have any questions or anything feel free to comment!

More pictures at the end of the pattern for reference.

Materials:

* Light yellow worsted yarn (I used Red heart ‘Cornmeal’)

*Gold/darker yellow worsted yarn (I used Red heart, I think the color is called ‘gold’)

*Small amount of burgundy or dark red worsted yarn

*small amount of white worsted yarn

*Small amount of black worsted yarn

*Large yarn needle for sewing pieces together

*Fiberfill/stuffing

*A chopstick or similar object is helpful when stuffing small objects, not required

*G hook and F hook

*Straight pins for pining pieces on before sewing them on

*Optional: beans, rice, or plastic beads & pantyhose (for weight, more info after body pattern)

Note: there is no gauge for this pattern. The only thing that is important is that you have a tight stitch when crocheting so that no stuffing will show through the finished pieces. If you use the recommended hooks it should be fine but if you are someone who crochets more loosely you may want to reduce the hook size accordingly.

This pattern is worked in rounds (unless otherwise noted) and uses the following techniques/abbreviations:
Sc- single crochet
Dc: double crochet
Hdc: half double crochet
inc- increase
dec- decrease, particularly you should use the invisible decrease if you know how to do it
sc in each sc- single crochet in each single crochet, don't add any increases or decreases
R- round or row
Blo- crochet in back loops only
FLO- crochet in front loops only
Repeat (*)- repeat what is between the asterisks * until you come to the end of the round, unless otherwise indicated
ring- magic ring. If you cannot do this technique then you may substitute this: ch 2 and sc however many were supposed to go in the ring into the second ch. However this will leave a small hole in the piece, this is why the magic ring is preferred, it leaves no visible hole. Many tutorials on how to do the magic ring are available online.

The numbers in parenthesis at the end of each row are the number of stitches you should have when that row is done. Mark the start of each round with a marker and move this marker as you complete rows.

IMPORTANT NOTE!
All pieces (unless otherwise indicated) are worked with TWO strands of yarn together. You may do this by taking the strand on the outside of the skien and the one which comes from the inside of the skien together. Crochet with two strands the same way you would crochet if you had only one. This will yield a bigger plush faster and with less effort than crocheting with only one strand. This pattern has not been tested for only one strand and pieces such as the eyes would need to be adjusted for size on your own.

All pieces are made with G hook unless otherwise indicated.

Pattern

Body (make in light yellow)
Note about body: Be sure to stuff as you go. In my plush I added weight to the bottom to make sure he’d sit up nicely (the head can be a bit heavy and put it off balance). If you’d like to add weight to your plush you need something like dried beans, rice, or plastic beads (they sell these at most craft stores, look for them to be called poly pellets or plastic doll weights, something like that. They can be found online too). Take a cheap nylon/pantyhose leg and fill it with beans/weights. Once you have enough, knot the nylon tightly and put the weight into your plush. Then stuff with polyfill/stuffing and your plush should sit up on it’s own!

R2-4: From now on put 3 sc into the sc at the top and the sc at the bottom of the oval each round. Sc in all others (the sc along the sides). Use your best judgment, the sc at the top may not always be the one right after the end of the round.
R5: sc in each sc all around, slip stitch to join.
Leave long tail for sewing.

Take 1 strand of black and F hook and chain 12, join into a loop with a slip stitch. Use this for the iris, sew it to the white.

Assembly (just general instructions, you can do it however you like) be sure to pin things on first to get it looking how you want!
1.   Sew head to neck/body. Just before head is completely sewed on, add more stuffing to make the neck very firm so it can hold up the head.
2.   Embroider patch, sew to belly.
3.   Sew arms to body
4.   Sew ‘pants’ to body, sew around the top and sew the bottom to the bottom of the body. You can stitch it to the body in a few other places to keep the wrinkles in place.
5.   Sew tail to ‘pants’. Make sure you sew through to attach it to the body, not just the pants.
6.   Sew feet to bottom, not just to the pants!
7.   Sew thing on top of head
8.   Embroider eyes and mouth and sew on face
You can sew the hands to the ‘pants’ to make it look like he’s holding them up if you want.

    1. Thanks! I'm glad I was finally able to get it finished! I was working on Scraggy and another Unova Pokemon simultaneously but got diverted when I got the idea to make Sparky from Frankenweenie. Right now I'm going to work on finishing the next Pokemon pattern, starting another new one (not Pokemon), and making a few patterns for Christmas presents. So I'll be pretty busy, hope to have something soon but it takes me a while to get a full pattern out! The next Pokemon pattern is a secret, just incase I can't finish it (which has happened to me before lol!). Wish me luck! ^_^

    1. Thank you so much! I'm a little too busy with other projects and Christmas presents to take requests but you can find a Celebi pattern here: http://shedko247.wordpress.com/2011/08/15/celebi/

  3. Maybe something is wrong on rows 24 and 25 of the head... Something didn't add up for me 18 instead of 12 in the last couple rows...

    2. Well thank YOU for the patterns! I can now crochet hurrah! Is this one fairly easy?

    3. That largely depends on how familiar you are with the general concepts of plush making. If you are comfortable with crocheting in the round and sewing parts together/assembling then this isn't too bad of a pattern. I would say it's just barely intermediate as the tail is a little strange to make. But there aren't many small pieces and not too much sewing so not too bad overall! Enjoy!

    1. I'm glad you like the pattern! I can refer you to wolfdreamer's pikachu pattern, it's very cute! I made it myself as well, I think I used either 2 or 3 strands held together and it made an almost life size one! If you want to make it even cuter try crocheting your own eyes by making a big black circle with a smaller white circle then sew them together, hope that helps!

  7. I'm making Scraggy as a present for someone. I'm up to Round 18 of the body and a little confused. If I repeat between the astericks there will only be 6 sc left and 39 stitches in total. So should I only decrease twice to be left with 40? And if yes, does it matter where in the round I decrease?
    Thank you

    1. Thanks for the question, sorry about the typo! That round should read *sc 19, dec* for a total of 40, hope that helps!

    2. Hi Kim, thanks for that. I'm now on the pants and have just completed round 11. Do I just do those nine stitches and fasten off or do I repeat it for the whole round or is it one round of each of the stitches?
      Thanks again

  9. Would you possible have a pattern for a Scraggy hat?

  10. I decided to make mine a shiny since I actually hatched one in game a couple weeks ago. Because he's too big to fit on the shelf where I normally put my crocheted plushies, I decided to let my scraggy sleep on my bed with me, which turned out to be a mistake because the light from outside illuminates him enough that all I can see are these huge bug eyes just staring at me while I sleep. XD
